Commission G5 Stellar and Planetary Atmospheres

Scientific Objectives

The commission aims to connect and support people working on stellar and planetary atmospheres and related fields.

Recent discoveries and current observation techniques blur the borders between traditional fields. For example, planetary and stellar atmosphere theories meet in the study of brown dwarfs. Extended stellar atmospheres can be investigated with techniques developed for the interstellar medium, and the accuracy of synthetic spectra crucially depends on laboratory measurements and quantum calculations. To explain new observations and understand at least the basic properties of exoplanets, oceanology and meteorology come into play. Actual progress can only be reached by effective and open communication among researchers in the individual branches, and Commission G5 offers a platform for such exchange.
