The IAU sponsors three series of triennial regional meetings, in the Asia-Pacific region (APRIM, since 1978), in the Latin-American region (LARIM, since 1978), and in the Middle-East-African region (MEARIM, since 2008) which are held at the invitation of a national astronomical society in the region, in years between the IAU General Assemblies. Their purpose is the discussion of scientific topics and promoting contacts between scientists in the regions. The next LARIM was planned for 2022 and APRIM and MEARIM for 2023.

The IAU Executive Committee decided at the EC105 meeting that the next 3 Regional Meetings, APRIM, LARIM & MEARIM, will all take place in 2023. This is a necessary decision that follows the postponement of the XXXI IAU General Assembly in Busan, Republic of Korea, until 2–11 August 2022 owing to the pandemic. The next IAU General Assembly after that, XXXII IAU General Assembly, is planned for 5–16 August 2024 in Cape Town, Republic of South Africa, following the normal schedule.
